SKIN TYPES and what works best!
Type 2 - White to light beige skin - Burns easily - tans minimally.
Type 2 tanners should avoid level 2 and start with a mix of our Level 4-6. Our level 6 bed provides the maximum UVB filters and emits mostly UVA rays. which is optimal for type 2 tanners. UVA rays offer Type 2 tanners a deeper tan with less burning. We recommend adding VersaSpa visits to Type 2 tanners package to accelerate your glow! VersaSpa Light or Medium solution recommended..
Type 3- Beige skin- Burns moderately – tans gradually to light brown
Type 3 tanners excel in Levels 4-6. We recommend sprinkling in Stand Up sessions to enhance coverage.
VersaSpa Medium solution for best results on Type 3.
Type 4 V Light Brown Skin- Burns minimally - tans well to moderately brown
Type 4 tanners respond well to most rays. We recommend starting with Level 5 to achieve a deep base and create a routine that include all levels to maintain your color. VersaSpa Medium or Dark recommended.
Type 5- Moderate Brown Skin- Rarely burns - tans profusely to dark brown.
We recommend an even mix of all levels for Type 5 tanners. These tanners generally achieve desired color in very few sessions and can maintain their color naturally with regular weekly maintenance. We do not recommend VersaSpa for Type 5 tanners unless they are looking for a quick bronzing experience for special events or competitions.
Low pressure (Level 2) units emit both UVA & UVB at a lower energy level 100 -120 watts. Low pressure units will give more of a red tone tan, and you’ll need to maintain more often. High pressure units (Levels 3-6) generate UVC, UVB, & UVA, but by means of a sophisticated filtering system, with Levels 5 and 6 emitting mostly UVA during a tanning session . It will take fewer sessions with a high pressure unit it to build a golden tan and to keep it. At Novi Beach Club we use premium bronzing lamps in all of our beds giving you a desired bronze tan. Our level 6 unit is a true UVA only high pressure tanning bed.
Lets first start by identifying the types of UV rays that our tanning units emit!
UVB Rays — Building Rays
NBC Levels 2 and 3
UVB rays are known as the “building rays”. This specific type of short wave ray builds melanin in your skin. Melanin is what produces the natural base tan and color. In short, the more melanin you have, the tanner you can become after developing a strong base tan. This base tan protects your skin from burning when you’re outside under the hot summer sun.
While UVB rays can help build your tan, UVB rays, also known as the “burn ray”, can also cause you to burn if you take on too much too soon. It is important to be patient and use those UVB rays to build up a great base tan over time.
Building up the right amount of melanin can take time, depending on your skin type and genetics, so don’t rush. Just think, while you’re piling up your melanin inventory, you’re also taking care of your vitamin D levels at the same time. If you rush your tan, you’ll end up with a burn. The best tans take a little time.
UVA Rays — Bronzing Rays
NBC Levels 3-6
Once you’ve built up your base tan, use UVA rays, also known as “bronzing rays”, to bronze the melanin. You’ve built up a substantial amount of melanin, and now it is time to use it to achieve the bronze tan you’ve longed for. The UVA rays help emit pigment (color) out of the melanin you’ve generated.
UVA long wave rays are strong and penetrate the skin deeper, so you’ll only need to be exposed to the rays for a short amount of time to produce a beautiful, long-lasting golden brown tan.
Use Both UVB and UVA Tanning Beds and mix in a few Stand Ups for the Best Results
In order to achieve your desired tanning results effectively, use a combination of UVA and UVB tanning beds once you’ve developed your base tan. By mixing it up, you’ll give your skin something to respond to.
Think about it this way, if you go to the gym three times a week and complete the same cardio exercise every time, after a while your body will get used to the workout and you won’t see any results. The same goes for tanning. Using a smart combination of UVA and UVB tanning beds after completing your base tan will give you the tanning results you’ve been looking for. Add VersaSpa to completely smash your glow goals!
Indoor tanning lotions also known as “accelerators” add nutrients your body needs to produce melanin. Our line of quality accelerators contain vitamin A, C, E, and botanicals that moisturize and increase blood flow, thus increasing oxygenation of melanin cells to help speed up the tanning process. UV rays reflect off of dry skin, the moisturizers in tanning accelerators help you absorb UV rays for better results. You will tan about twice as fast and keep your tan twice as long.
Yes, in fact, sometimes more so because you are in a controlled environment. Your skin produces a tan the same way in an indoor tanning salon as it does when you lay out in the sun: through ultraviolet (UV) light. However, out in the sun, you cannot control the amount of UV light exposure and trying to achieve an all-over even-body tan is very difficult. Indoor tanning allows you to control the amount of UV light, for an all-over even tan. With indoor tanning you can gradually increase your exposure time eliminating any sunburn, which is harmful to the skin. The results and convenience of an “indoor tan” allows a year round healthy looking tan without concerns of prolonged exposure to the burning rays of the sun.
To build an awesome tan, tan regularly. Allowing too much time between visits will cause your tan to fade. Most people will see a skin color change after the first few sessions. Normally, you will have a good base tan in 6-10 sessions. Then one or two sessions a week thereafter will maintain your tan year round. There are special cells in the skin called melanocytes. Ultraviolet B rays stimulate these cells and cause them to produce melanin. As these cells migrate to the surface of the skin, ultraviolet A rays oxidize them; thus creating a tan. Each of us has a different amount of melanin. Fair-skinned, fair-haired people generally have less than dark-haired, dark-skinned people. This determines, for the most part, how quickly and how dark your skin will tan.
Tanning more than once in a 24 hour period in not permitted. However we do offer a “Double Dip”. experience which allows 1 UV AND 1 VersaSpa visit on the same day!!! To get an “instant” tan or an “extra boost” to your tan you should consider using our sunless VersaSpa immediately after tanning in a bed or booth. In just seconds you can have the natural-looking bronze color you desire. There is no such limitation for spray booth tans and spray booth tanning is allowed on the same day as a traditional tanning session.
When you are taking photosensitizing medication it is not recommended to tan outdoors or indoors. If you aren’t sure, ask your doctor, or ask our tanning consultant to see a list of medications, which can greatly increase the risk of overexposure. A partial list, by no means inclusive, appears below.
Many common medications and even ingredients in food, shampoos & soaps can cause photo sensitivity which may lead to overexposure. If you are taking prescription medications please check with your physician regarding possible photo sensitivity. Perfumes and colognes containing Furocoumarins, compound from natural products such as plants and fruits, can cause your skin to become highly sensitive to UV light. Food and fruits that contain photosensitizing agents: celery, carrots, lime, coriander, parsley, fennel, dill, buttercup, mustard and fig.
Not everyone will experience a photosensitive reaction. Also, someone who experiences a photosensitive reaction once will NOT necessarily experience it again or every time.
Medications will NOT cause the same degree of skin reaction in all individuals.
A growing body of scientific evidence exists that shows some people require more light exposure in order to function properly. Bright light exposure, such as the mid-day summer sun, causes the brain to suppress the release of the hormone melatonin which acts as a depressant in the body if generated during the daytime. Effected people, exposed to longer hours of bright light, feel happier and more able to enjoy life. Bright light sources emitting only visible light are now frequently used to successfully treat Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) and Sub-syndrome Seasonal Affective Disorder (SSAD).
